Malena, an 11-year-old Amur tiger at Brookfield Zoo, announced on Friday that she tested positive for COVID-19.
Other large cats in the zoo are now showing symptoms similar to Malena (coughing, sneezing, malaise), and the zoo is USDA National Veterinary Services Institute.. According to the zoo, these results should be available next week.
Brookfield Zoo began vaccination of animals against COVID-19 in early September.. Malena received the first dose of the Zoetis vaccine specifically prescribed for animals on September 16, and was scheduled to receive a second dose next week, the zoo said.
Big cats, along with primates, bears and small carnivores, are known to be susceptible to the coronavirus and were one of the first species of vaccinated zoos.
