Has been updated:Pristina, Kosovo (AP) — Kosovo’s central right-wing opposition was in control of Sunday’s local elections, but early results show that a final vote is needed to determine half of the winners.
About 1.9 million voters in a small country on the Balkans have elected mayors of 38 municipalities and about 1,000 city council members. According to the election authorities, the turnout of the primary election was 42.5%, less than four years ago.
Approximately 25% of the votes were counted, according to election officials, and preliminary results showed that 19 commune would need a final vote in a month to elect the mayor.
The main contest is the Pristina City Hall, the left-wing self-determination party, or Vetëvendosche! Has nominated former Health Minister Alben Vitia. Vetëvendosche! Leads the contest, but does not exceed 50% of the results, so a spill is expected in the capital of Kosovo.
The vote was peaceful. Police arrested seven people for possible voting violations.
Preliminary results show that the Serbian minority Srpska List party in Kosovo, near the Serbian government in Belgrade, has won most of the seats in northern Kosovo.
Tensions have increased between Serbia and Kosovo over the past two months. Kosovo is a former Serbian state that made up the majority of Albanians who declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Serbia is unaware of this move.
Kosovo police clashed with Serbs during an anti-smuggling operation last week, and last month the dispute over their shared border vehicle license plates was resolved only after mediation from the European Union and the United States. NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) has deployed troops in border areas to end spats.
The International Observer will publish a preliminary report on voting on Tuesday.
