Chicago (AP) —Published reports show that counties in Illinois, including Chicago, are experiencing more carjacking this year than they were 20 years ago.
By the end of September, this year’s Cook County had nearly 44% more carjacking than it was at the same time last year. Reported by Chicago Sun Times..
This year, Cook County suffered about 1,400 carjacking casualties. Most carjacking takes place on the West Side of Chicago. To address this issue, the Chicago Police Department has expanded the Carjack Task Force, including Cook County Authorities, Illinois State Police, and the FBI.
More than two-thirds of the victims were men. The most targeted vehicle model is the Toyota Camry, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Anthony Jones, a suburb of Chicago, was killed while driving in Oak Park in January. He was shot dead and hospitalized for 6 days. He has severe retinal damage.
A few months later, a man was charged with several violent crimes, including the shooting of Jones.
Jones said he had replaced one of the bullet-shattered car windows.
