Athens, Georgia (AP) —A shooting in Georgia killed a former NASCAR driver on Saturday and injured a woman, investigators said.
John Wes Townley, 31, was killed in a shooting in the neighborhood around 9 pm, said Sony Wilson, a coroner in Athens-Clark County. Athens Banner-Herald..
A 30-year-old woman was injured, but police did not reveal details of her injury.
Police spoke to a shooter who knew the victim. Lieutenant Sean Burnett of the Athens-Clark County Police Department said the shooting appeared to be related to domestic violence.
No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing, Burnett said.
Townley has raced for eight seasons and has made 186 starts across the NASCAR RXfinity and Truck series, the bottom two domestic divisions of NASCAR. His victory in the track series in Las Vegas six years ago was the only national series victory in his career.
Townley drove a car owned by his father, co-founder of Zaxby’s, a restaurant chain that is a major sponsor of the car.
