James Michael Tyler, The actor who played Gunther friendHe died of stage 4 prostate cancer on Sunday at his home in Los Angeles. Deadline confirmed. He was 59 years old.
Tyler, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018, opened up about his fight to today in June. He confirmed that “late cancer” had spread to the bones and spine, paralyzing the lower body.
“So, in the end, you know, it will probably get me,” he said.
“All I had to do was take pills in the morning and at night and the boom. Life was almost normal,” he told Craig Melvin. He said the cancer had mutated “during a pandemic.”
Tyler was born on May 28, 1962 in Greenwood, Mississippi, the youngest of five children. By the age of 12, he had lost both of his parents. He moved to live with his South Carolina sisters.
His love of acting blossomed when he earned a degree in geology in 1984 while playing as a member of a student theater group at Clemson University. Four years later, he moved to Los Angeles, where he began working as a production assistant and assistant film editor.
