According to the White House, Washington (AP) -Vice President Kamala Harris will head to Paris next month to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The White House announced Harris’ visit to France when President Joe Biden and Macron spoke on the phone on Friday. The two presidents will meet in the margins of 20 summits in Rome later this month.
Macron’s office said in a statement that he and Biden had discussed “establishing a stronger European defense that complements NATO and contributes to world security.”
In addition to the meeting with Macron, Harris will give a speech at the annual Paris Peace Forum on November 11th and will attend the Paris Conference in Libya the next day. She visits with her husband Douglas Emhoff.
The upcoming meeting is in the midst of an effort by the Biden administration to ease relations with France, which was tense due to the US agreement to sell a nuclear submarine to Australia announced last month. The US move has fallen below more than $ 60 billion in transactions by French defense contractors regarding the sale of diesel submarines to Australia.
“They discussed the importance of transatlantic relations to world peace and security, and the importance of our partnership on global challenges from COVID-19 and the climate crisis to issues affecting Sahel and the Indo-Pacific. “I emphasize,” said Harris Senior Advisor Simone Sanders in a statement.
Harris and Emhoff’s visit coincides with US Veterans Day and French Armistice Day. According to Sanders, the two plans celebrate a solemn memorial with a visit to the Schleine-American Cemetery on the outskirts of Paris.
