Whatever the signs of small progress Sacramento Kings has shown over the last two seasons under Luke Walton, the end result is the same.
The Kings missed the postseason for 15 consecutive seasons and suffered the longest playoff drought in NBA history.
Kings will enter his third year under Walton, led by lightning-fast point guard De’Aaron Fox and second-year guard Tyrese Haliburton, but questions will not stop until the drought is over. I know
“Obviously you don’t want to be part of it and stick to it, but after all, we need to worry about what we can do,” Sacramento celebrates its fifth season. Fox said. “When you’re there, I can’t worry about five years I was here, or more than ten years ago. Go out and play.”
Kings finished 11th at the Western Conference, where he played two games from the play-in tournament last season 31-41. This was in line with the futile record set by the Clippers franchise. The Clippers franchise missed the playoffs for 15 consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1991 while playing in Buffalo, San Diego and Los Angeles.
This drought has been endured by only one fan base in Sacramento. It’s just as important to provide it to fans as Kings players want to go to the postseason on their own.
“Obviously, we want to allow fans to play off,” Halliburton said. “We want to bring Kings back into the playoffs. That’s clearly our biggest goal. I don’t think anyone wants it any more than we do.”
Kings has played well under Walton for the past two seasons, but with a handful of long-losing sources.
They lost nine games twice in a row last season and fell into a deep hole early on, ending their hopes for the playoffs later in the season.
“If we halve both, we’re in a completely different team,” says Fox. “We’re in a completely different place. Everyone is happy. It’s a big chunk of the season because people are talking about us playing in, maybe playing off. We’re ourselves. You have to keep doing what you’re doing and don’t change the losing streak of those three games to 9 or 10. “
3 guard lineup
Kings’ strength lies in the back court, especially after drafting Davion Mitchell and joining Fox, Halliburton and Buddy Hield. For this reason, there are many talks about playing three guards at a time this season. It’s welcomed by the guards, but they know it can’t happen if they can’t stand the defenses and rebounds.
“If we can’t, obviously the three of us can’t play together and the coach needs to understand something else,” Fox said. “But we all want to play together.”
Gross defense
One of the biggest problems for Kings last season was the defensive side. Sacramento’s opponents shot the league’s highest 48.4% from the field, including 54.9% from inside the 3-point arc. Kings allowed the third highest number of points in the league at 117.4 per game.
Return to town
Throughout the off-season, there was uncertainty about the situation of Hield and forward Marvin Bagley III. Both players were linked by some trade rumors throughout the summer, but are back in another season in Sacramento.
“It’s part of the business we do today,” Bagley said. “That’s something I can’t control.
Schedule staff
If the Kings want to get off to a fast start, they will have to succeed on the road. They start the season away from home in nine of the first 15 games. After that, Sacramento will end the season in 7 out of 9 games. This can be a major factor if the Kings are trying to delay the playoffs.
