New York (AP) — Lashana Lynch was undergoing stunt training when she learned to play 00 Agent in the James Bond movie No Time to Die.
Lynch was already cast by director Cary Joji Fukunaga and producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson. But who she plays remained a mystery to her. She was undecided but apparently doing her best to prepare for the role of kicking.
“It didn’t make any sense. I rushed into the stunts and they taught me everything in the sun,” Lynch said in an interview. “And I’m: Why are you teaching me this? What do you mean?”
Instead, Lynch listened little by little when she went. She feels like a television series that reveals each episode little by little, she says. Full exposure came only when she was in the midst of a summer raid and fake gun firing. Lynch will be the first black woman to play 00 Agent in the James Bond movie 60 years.
Not only that, Lynch’s character, Flea, will be codenamed 007 from the British Secret Intelligence Service, along with Daniel Craig’s James Bond AWOL.
“The audition for mysterious movies and mysterious characters has turned into the possibilities of Bond movies and mysterious characters,” Lynch recalls. “It turned out to be a solid Bond movie, and someone could come in and create a really beautiful storm.”
No Time to Die, released at a US theater on Friday, is Craig’s fifth and final performance as a Super Spy. But this movie probably gets more of its punch from women than previous Bond movies. This includes Léa Seydou, Bond’s most lasting romance and character with her own complex history, and Ana de Armas, who has a concise yet action-packed look.
Lynch’s role, however, is a franchise landmark. Along with its history, the 33-year-old British Jamaican actor who played a single-mother fighter pilot in “Captain Marvel” has been spotlighted more brightly than ever. Lynch has been widely celebrated for expanding the world of historically homogeneous Bonds and, like others who brought widespread representation to the franchise decades ago, to bring hostility online. When the news that Lynch would be 007 was first leaked in 2019, her Instagram was brightened with racist and misleading comments.
“I remembered the institution I was walking in and the world that didn’t necessarily support people like me,” says Lynch. “As soon as I finished the first reaction, I started working. I turned that energy into stunts, filming, spending time with my family, and again reassessing my phone usage. I’m in the cupboard now. I take a two hour break. “
“It should always be raised,” she adds. “Young people need to hear it.”
Lynch first caught the attention of broccoli with the broccoli-produced royal play “Ear for Eye” by Debbie Tucker Green. Lynch was part of a predominantly black ensemble that gave individual testimony of the prejudices they experience in life.
“I was just impressed with her,” says Broccoli, who also produced the next film version of “Ear for Eye,” which co-starred with Lynch, which premiered at the London Film Festival on October 16. “She is an extraordinarily beautiful and talented actor. She seemed to be an obvious choice for the 00 character Noumi. I think she’s a big star.”
Lynch says she had little to do with Bond movies before Craig took over Bond. However, she says she felt she was probably entering the franchise at the right time by being invited to the audition.
“As a Black Londoner, I didn’t have the opportunity to connect to James Bond in a reasonable way,” says Lynch. “Now Daniel Craig has entered the franchise and made him raw, dark and dangerous. I questioned his trauma for the first time. How the new franchise character reacts to him I was really intrigued about. “
In No Time to Die, Bond was surprised to find that he eventually returned to service and obtained a trademark number. What follows between him and Noumi is some competition and some partnerships. Noumi asserts herself with proud self-confidence and uncertain moments. Bond adapts to her. For Lynch, she is most proud that Noumi’s strengths are not vulnerable.
“Like many of us, it’s always at the forefront. It’s just at the forefront of being in the world,” Lynch says of Noumi’s attitude. “When we talk about’strong black women’, we have a really natural, realistic and easy impact on our youth in that they don’t just assume that their power has fallen from the sky and landed on their brains. I would like.”
