Thanks to Mitch Haniger, the Seattle Mariners still have something to play on the last day of the regular season.
Haniger belted Homer on Saturday night to accentuate his four-hit, five-run performance. The Mariners lived up to their playoff hopes with a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels they visited.
“I think the’Haniger Game’is what we call it,” said Scott Survey, Mariners manager.
The Mariners (90-71), who won 11 of the last 13 games, are tied to Toronto, one game behind the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox in two American League wildcard playoff berths.
Simply put, Seattle must defeat the Yankees or the Red Sox to defeat the Angels (76-85) on Sunday and force the playoffs of the final wildcard spot.
“Our team refused to quit, they never quit, and they never quit (Saturday night),” Servais said. “Credits go to our players, they keep sharpening. There is still something to play in Game 162.”
Tyler Anderson (7-10, 4.41 ERA), acquired by the Mariners shortly before the Pittsburgh deal deadline, will face fellow left-handed Reed Detomers (1-3, 7.11) on Sunday.
Haniger hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning on Saturday, defeating a 1-1 tie, and came to the plate with two outs in the eighth inning, with bases loaded and his team dragging in the run. Haniger lined up a two-run single on the left fielder, giving the Mariners a 5-4 lead. He also had a run score single to beat the scoreless tie third.
“Try to win every game and win every pitch,” Haniger said. “Every pitch makes so much sense, so every run we can cross the plate has so many, especially in these last couple games, this last series. bottom.”
The winning rally was from former Mariners pitcher Steve Cishek of Angels Relief.

Detomers, who will play in the first round from Louisville in 2020, will make their fifth major league start and face the Mariners for the first time. He hasn’t pitched since August 21st after being on the COVID related injured list.
