To secure the project, the Commonwealth has agreed to pay $ 8.5 million to upgrade its water infrastructure to an industrial site called Progress Park.

Republican Rep. Morgan Griffith, who represents the 9th Congress District in southwestern Virginia, called the announcement “great news for the region.”
“It will provide our citizens with opportunities, economic growth in the community, and tax revenues to support public services,” he said in a statement.
Northam said the project would create “high-paying jobs.” The news release did not specify an average wage.
Wythe County is about an hour’s drive southwest of Roanoke. State data show that for more than a decade, unemployment has tended to be higher than the state as a whole, but by 2020 it will be lower than the national average.
Southwestern Virginia has long been in decline as coal mining jobs have been depleted and many manufacturing jobs have moved abroad. This area is also losing population.
