Bloomington, Illinois (Wand)-A Monday night fire in a Bloomington apartment killed residents and ended with multiple people going to the hospital.
At 11:08 pm on Monday, firefighters responded to 603 W. Market St. and found smoke coming from the eaves of the building. Multiple residents were outside with their neighbors.
The crew from the first engine that arrived at the scene entered in the handline. The first report to 911 talked about “a house where everyone is on fire.” Follow-up reports from bystanders provided inconsistent information as to whether everyone was out or if one or two residents could still be inside.
Respondents from the regular fire department and the Bloomington Township Fire Department were sought for assistance. Approximately 40 minutes after the response, the crew had to leave due to the condition of the building and move on to defensive tactics. The crew was initially unable to reach the third floor because the stairs were burned down.
They were evacuated again in another attempt to re-enter and attack the “seat” of the fire.
After a large-scale external attack involving four handlines and aerial equipment, the fire was primarily controlled and responders were able to enter inside. At around 2:20 am on Tuesday, the crew found a 62-year-old resident dead in his apartment.
The coroner’s office identified the victim accordingly. The name has not yet been published because the relatives have not been notified yet. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 am.
The other five residents were taken to a local hospital for fire-related injuries. As of Tuesday, there were no further updates.
The Red Cross was informed that eight adults were in need of help. All of them were evacuated after the building was destroyed by the fire.
The cause of this fire is under investigation and no damage has been estimated.
