London (AP) Matt Ryan throws 342 yards and two touchdowns, including Kylepits’ first NFL score, and the Atlanta Falcons wins 27-20 on Sunday’s NFL return to London, New York Jets. I held it and closed it.
The Falcons (2-3) took a 20-3 lead in half-time and eventually won despite Jets losing two fumbles.
However, Zach Wilson and Jets (1-4) had a hard time moving the ball. This is the story of the rookie quarterback season. Wilson, who finished the best match of the season against Tennessee last week, finished 19 out of 32 yards at 192 yards with no touchdown in one intercept.
Wilson lost two spots to Atlanta in fourth place overall in the April NFL Draft, and Pitts had nine receptions at 119 yards, the best match in the first NF LTD.
Ryan completed 33 of the 45 passes without a passcut, even though he played without the top two receivers from Calvin Ridley and Russell Gage. Ridley did not accompany the team to London “due to personal problems,” but Gauge was on the sidelines with an ankle injury.
Cordarrelle Patterson did a little bit of everything for the Falcons, and Jets had few answers for him. The running back / wide receiver / kick returner had seven receptions at 60 yards and ran 54 yards leading the team with 14 carries.
Jets struggled again in the first half, scoring only 80 yards and five first downs in the first two quarters, compared to the Falcons’ 251 yards and 17 first downs. New York fought a rushing TD from Ty Johnson and Michael Carter in the second half, but failed to make a successful comeback.
Jamison Crowder’s catch on Carter’s two-yard run and two-point conversion trimmed Atlanta’s lead to 20-17 with 6:55 remaining.
The Falcons finally found the dagger drive they had lost, driving 75 yards in nine plays and ending with a three-yard run by Mike Davis. On the second goal, Davis took the handoff, spun, got a collective push from the aggressive lineman, entered the end zone and extended the lead to 27-17 at 2:19. Davis finished 53 yards with 13 carries.
The scoring drive included a 39-yard reception by Pitts, followed by a 15-yard catch and dive by Oramide Zashaw, who went down to Jets 24 in 3rd and 13th.
Matt Amendra’s 49-yard field goal was 27-20, but Jets’ onside kick was restored by Falcons receiver Orami Desashaw, sealing Atlanta’s victory.
Pit party
After Patterson gave Jets 2 a 17-yard reception in the first quarter, the Falcons were in a mismatch with defensive end John Franklin-Myers covering the pits with their first goal. Ryan hit the pits near the far right corner of the end zone to make it 10-0.
After another Jets three-out, including Wilson throwing behind Corey Davis, the Falcons finished a 77-yard drive to 17-0 with Hayden Hurst’s 17-yard TD catch.
London stall
London was not kind to new quarterbacks. Wilson’s defeat has made them 0-5 in the British capital since the NFL began staging regular season matches here in 2007.
This was the second match against London for both teams, but the first match at Tottenham. In 2014, the Falcons led the Detroit Lions 21-0 and lost 22-21 in a 48-yard FG that won a Matt Platter match at Wembley Stadium. A year later, Jets also defeated the Miami Dolphins at Wembley 27-14.
The NFL will host another match in Tottenham next Sunday when Jacksonville Jaguar will face the Miami Dolphins.
