Located in Chicago’s Bronzeville district, the Delazar Institute is all about the power of girls these days, with two outstanding female kickers, not just one playing high school football.
De La Salle is Chicago’s third oldest Catholic school, but this fall, Meteor is making history for another reason.
This is Miarosa’s second season as a meteor starting varsity kicker.
“I think she can be anywhere from the age of 40,” said Mike Böhm, football coach at the Delazar Institute.
When I saw Rosa, a veteran soccer player in last year’s practice, a revelation of Böhm’s hiring came.
“I was kicking a soccer ball like a shot from a long distance. He looked at my foot and thought,’Try a field goal, maybe you can do it,'” Mia said. Recollected.
“Hey, maybe she can help us, so you go over there, you bring your long snapper and your holder, and she just begins to liven up them,” Böhm said. Said.
“I’ve done that, and he was like,’Let’s take you to the football team,'” Mia said.
Mia scored more than 12 points this season alone.
“At the high school level, when dealing with additional points or even field goals, those points are huge,” Böhm said. “She is more consistent with PAT than any boy we have.”
This year, another Rosa joined the Delasar team with Mia’s sister Shishi and kicked the JV team.
“She didn’t hesitate because she saw it happen and wanted to do the same right away,” said Thomas Schellgen, principal of the Delazar Institute.
“If you want me too, I want it,” Shishi said. “Now we are the kickers for JV and Varsity.”
The sisters said they would encourage each other.
“When they are practicing their work, they can see them helping each other and guiding each other,” Böhm said.
Their teammates are also big fans.
“I’m like the sister of the team. They protect me in the field,” Mia said.
While Sister Rosa is making history in De La Salle, it is a recurring sense of history for the family. Mia and Shishi’s mother was an outstanding soccer player in high school. At the time, there was no women’s team in her school, so she created the men’s team first.
“Leaving the mark in high school was really big for her. She’s also in the high school hall of fame,” Mia said.
“She was like,’Do your best, don’t look back,'” Shishi added.
“I think it’s really good for our school to see girls who can do what boys can do, like the power of girls,” Mia said.
“You look at Facebook and Twitter posts from your parents and just get together around her and say” the power of the girl. ” “It’s pretty cool,” Böhm said.
