Has been updated:Lubbock, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech fired Matt Wells coach on Monday. This was two days after the Red Raiders lost to Kansas State at home and failed to hold a two-touchdown half-time lead.
Wells sought his first record of winning the Red Raiders for the third season, but not winning the Big 12 games bothered him as well as his predecessor, Cliff Kingsbury.
The Red Raiders (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) didn’t win a series of conference games under Wells, who came from Utah State University on behalf of Kingsbury. Texas Tech was 13-17 overall and 7-16 at the conference under Wells. Kingsbury was 19-35 years old in a six-season league match.
Athletic director Kirby Hokat announced the move, saying aggressive coordinator Sony Kamby will be the interim head coach for the rest of the season. Tech will visit the 4th Oklahoma on Saturday.
Hokat is looking for a third coach since 2013. Hokat made the latest move after losing to his alma mater, Kansas State University, 25-24. Wildcats dragged 14-0 and 24-10 in halftime before the rally.
Wells’ future was questioned after finishing 4-6 in last year’s pandemic shortening season. The Red Raiders were 8-14 in the first two seasons. However, Hokat called for a post-season press conference saying Wells would be back.
The first sign of Wells’ trouble this year was a 70-35 defeat at rival Texas in the Big 12 opener, followed by a 52-31 defeat at home on the TCU two weeks later. This is the only victory for Horned Frogs in the last five games.
Wells is 57-51 in more than eight years of season, including the 44-34 mark in Utah. He was hired by Texas Tech after spending 10-2 seasons at Aggie’s.
Kingsbury was hired as an aggressive coordinator in Southern California after leaving Texas Tech. He had never coached a Trojan horse and instead went to the NFL as an Arizona coach. In his third season, the Cardinal is 7-0 for the first time since 1974.
