Has been updated:San Diego (AP) —The wreckage of a US Navy helicopter crashed in the Pacific Ocean off California and the bodies of five people were recovered, the Navy said in a statement Tuesday.
The MH-60S helicopter, its two pilots, and three other sailors were lost in an accident on August 31, about 69 miles (111 km) from the San Diego coast.
According to the Navy, rescue teams aboard the multipurpose ship HOS Bayeux recovered from a depth of about 5,300 feet (1,615 meters) on Friday.
Bayeux arrived at the North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego Bay on Sunday, and the body was sent to Dover Air Force Base, Delaware for identification.
The helicopter was operated by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier when the rotor collided with the flight deck and the aircraft fell into the sea. Immediately after the crash, a crew member was rescued.
The search for other survivors continued for almost a week before the Navy declared the missing sailors dead.
They were Lieutenant Bradley A. Foster, 29, a pilot in Oakhurst, California. Lieutenant Paul R. Fridley, a pilot in Annandale, Virginia, 28 years old. 2nd class Naval Airman (helicopter) from Salem, Virginia James P. Briak, 31 years old. Sara F. Burns, a second-class non-commissioned officer from Severna Park, Maryland, 31 years old. Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Bailey J. Tucker from St. Louis, Missouri, 21 years old.
The Navy said investigations into the crash were ongoing.
