It’s 2021 — Over the past few months, we’ve seen many restaurants rise figuratively from the ashes and reopen after months (years!) Closure. However, it is still rare to see a restaurant literally rise from the ashes. That’s exactly what Sorazo did. The West Elsdon Restaurant, formerly known as El Sorazo, closed in a fire two years ago. The owner, Pepe Barajas, had the opportunity not only to rebuild, but also to rethink with a slightly upscale menu and a fairly spectacular agave and cocktail program.
El Sorazo was arguably one of the hidden gems visited by diners from all over the city (I made some memorable visits myself). There was a lot of coverage, including many TV spots, but after a long time, it was definitely ready for a refresh. “The fire actually gave us an opportunity because we always had a lot of things we wanted to do in Solazo,” says Barajas. “There were a lot of problems with the space we could fix, such as plumbing and electrical equipment. Apart from that, we had to add a bar for outdoor seating and a large patio. We have loyal supporters from the neighborhood. I wanted to make sure it was a fan favorite because I had it, but it has a new and improved atmosphere that encourages customers to try something new. “
Barajas also owns Lajocy in Westloop and wanted to bring some of that energy to a new version of Solazo. “People were excited about our beverage program at Lajocy and knew that the West Elsdon district where I grew up needed this.”
As far as I am concerned, the most exciting part of the new Solazo is the Agave program. “I really want to help these families who have distilled wild agave for generations in Mexico, especially in Jalisco,” explains Barajas. “There are so many options that people who enjoy tequila may not know, like Mezcal and Laicilla. We will work to involve bar staff, educate our customers and share their passion. The Sorazo bar is full of lesser-known agave spirits, such as the mezcal and tequila cross-flavored bacanola. With over 100 agave spirits, Sorazo is a must-see for mezcal and tequila lovers.
Solazo also offers flavorful modern Mexican food at a price that won’t break the bank. Check out tacos stuffed with beer-tattered Baja California striped baths with napa cabbage, jalapeno pickles, agabe coriander aioli, or tiger shrimp ceviche with coriander, avocado, and chili pickles. I’m particularly excited about tacos stuffed with oyster mushrooms, serrano chili, roasted corn and chili peppers.
Solazo has been open since late September. Currently, the restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday, so be sure to check the opening hours before you go. 5600 S. Pulaski Rd. , West Elsdon
