According to the results of an annual survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation, the average cost of Thanksgiving feasts is projected to rise by 14% in 2021.

The organization, which has been tracking Thanksgiving meal prices for 36 years, estimates that supper ingredients designed to feed 10 people will go from $ 46.90 to $ 53.31 in 2020. In Illinois, food takes an even bigger bite from your wallet. An average of $ 58.15, according to a cost survey conducted by the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

The informal survey shopping list includes turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, buttered rolls, pea, cranberries, vegetable trays, whipped cream pumpkin pie, coffee and milk. Items have been consistent for decades to facilitate comparisons.

Prices are reported by shoppers visiting grocery stores nationwide from late October to early November. Since then, many grocery stores have begun to significantly discount products such as frozen turkey, the Illinois Department of Agriculture said.

“Consumers can rest assured that they can find bargains at local grocery stores,” said Richard Geber, Jr., president of the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

According to Veronica Nigh, senior economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation, many factors have contributed to rising food prices this year.

Due to supply chain issues, the other side effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are similar.

“The tendency of consumers to cook and eat at home for pandemics has led to increased demand in supermarkets and higher prices for retail food,” said Nigh.

In the spirit of cost savings, this year may finally be a year of exciting cranberry sauce from the Thanksgiving menu.
