Birmingham, Alabama (AP) — A boy in Alabama, whose mother gave birth in just 21 weeks and weighed less than a pound after giving birth on the first day of pregnancy, is recognized as the most premature baby in the world.
Guinness World Records And UAB Hospital announced on Wednesday that Curtis Means, who weighed only 14.8 ounces (420 grams) at birth, set a new record. Born on July 5, 2020, 132 days prematurely with twins who did not survive, Curtis is now healthy and 16 months old.
Dr. Brian Simms, his doctor, shows that statistics show that a child born very young has virtually no chance of survival, but Curtis goes beyond that.
“We usually recommend compassionate care in these very preterm birth situations,” Sims said in a statement from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, which operates the hospital. “This makes it even more important for parents to hug their baby and spend time with them.”
Instead, Curtis became stronger and stronger and was discharged from the hospital 275 days later. He needed the help of a therapist to start eating with his mouth.
“I always remember being able to finally take Curtis home and surprise older children with my brother,” said Michel Butler, a mother in the countryside of Eutaw, Alabama, in a statement. That’s the moment. “
The foetation is considered to be at maturity at 40 weeks, but Butler gave birth after giving birth to twins in just over half that period. She was transferred to the UAB Hospital, which has a regional neonatal intensive care unit, where she gave birth to Curtis and Kasha.
C’Asya died a day later, but Curtis was able to remove the ventilator three months later. After months of 24-hour care, he returned home in April.
“No one else is like Curtis, so I don’t know what the future holds for Curtis,” Sims said. “He started writing his story from the day he was born, which will be read and studied by many and will hopefully help improve the care of premature babies around the world.”
Guinness said Curtis beat the previous record by just one day. Originally from Wisconsin, Richard Hutchinson was born in June 2020 for two days with a gestational age of 21 weeks.
