American Airlines Cancels Hundreds Weekend Flights | WGN Radio 720

Dallas (AP) — American Airlines has canceled approximately 1,600 flights in the last three days due to the fierce situation in Texas and the shortage of flight attendants.

The turmoil was similar in origin and magnitude to the problem Southwest Airlines suffered in early October, asking an ominous question as to whether major airlines are preparing for their busy next vacation trip.

According to tracking service FlightAware, American Airlines canceled nearly 900 flights on Friday and Saturday, and then canceled more than 700 flights (almost 30% of the day’s schedule) by noon on Sunday.

American trouble began at the end of the week, with strong winds sometimes shutting down flights and making all runways at Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport, the busiest hub of airlines, unavailable. This made it difficult for Americans to deploy crew for their next flight, and cancellations and delays worsened over Saturday and Sunday.

David Seymour, Chief Operating Officer of the airline, said: A note to employees on Saturday.

According to Seymour, American Airlines was able to take most of the stranded travelers on other flights on the same day.

In early October, Southwest Airlines canceled well over 2,000 flights, starting with Florida weather problems and aggravated by staff shortages.

Airlines were barred from dismissing workers during a pandemic as a condition of billions of federal pandemic bailouts, which they voluntarily quit after accepting cash incentives for thousands of employees. Did not stop persuading. Southwestern United States and elsewhere are currently hiring employees on behalf of those who retired in 2020.

According to Seymour, American Airlines has increased its staff, with approximately 1,800 flight attendants returning to work from December 1st to Sunday, with at least 600 new employees on board by the end of the year. He said the airline is strengthening employment for other jobs, including pilots and booking agencies, in time for the holidays.
