Washington Capitals is in good shape with about a quarter of the schedule.
Carolina Hurricanes is even better.
Team meets Sunday afternoon in Raleigh, NC
“There are moments you have to take, which creates a bit of belief,” said hurricane forward Sebastian Aho.
This will be the first home game of a hurricane more than two weeks after a six-game road trip. They were 4-1-1 in those games, including a 6-3 victory in Philadelphia on Friday afternoon.
“We feel like we’re on the road forever,” said Rod Blind Amour, director of Hurricane.
The top two teams in the Metropolitan division, Capitals and Hurricanes, each have only three regulatory losses. The hurricane has taken it to another level.
According to the league, with 15 wins in 19 games (15-3-1), Carolina is the fourth fastest rise to the NHL’s 15-win level in the last 20 years.
“Sure, we have talent,” said Brind’Amour.
There are so many plans for this first Capitals-Hurricanes conference this season.
First, Capitals coach Peter Laviolette returned to Raleigh, leading the hurricane to the 2006 Stanley Cup. The team was capped by Brind’Amour.
Hurricane has eliminated the capital in a spectacular first round of turmoil in the 2019 7-game series. This was the last time the NHL postseason was held with a traditional setup.
Captain Alex Ovechkin finishes the match on Friday night when he posted a hat-trick to the Florida Panthers.
“He’s launching a lot of attacks in the way he plays the game,” Laviolette said.
Ovechkin has 273 career power play goals and is shy to NHL leader Dave and Reichuk.
Playing Panthers in a fast-paced game was one thing. It may look calmer compared to playing against Carolina.
“The next game will be faster,” Laviolette said. “This is a great opportunity to play against top teams or teams in our department.”
Capitals have won the last two games, including a 4-3 home showdown against the Florida Panthers on Friday. Washington players like how they have been challenged.
“We played some pretty good teams, and we’re right there,” said Tom Wilson, Capitals’ right-winger. “We want to keep moving forward. It was great to see, and I said that for a month or so.”
The Washington lineup is still underway as some players were absent due to injury.
“We want to get everyone back and see where the lineup goes from there,” Laviolette said.
Brind’Amour said there are factors that need to be addressed. He said the first bad match for the team’s power play took place on Friday in Philadelphia.
“It’s great to say we won 6-3 and had bad power play,” said Brind’Amour.
Carolina goalkeepers Frederik Andersen and Anti Laanta each played three road trips.
Washington scored two or more goals in three of the eight road games this month.
