Designer Virgil Abloh, a leading fashion executive acclaimed as his generation Karl Lagerfeld, died after a private fight against cancer. He was 41 years old.

Abloh’s death was announced on Sunday by the off-white label founded by luxury groups LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy) and Abloh. Abloh was a men’s wear designer for Louis Vuitton.

“We are all shocked by this horrifying news. Virgil was a genius designer, not only a visionary, but also a man with a beautiful soul and great wisdom,” said LVMH Chairman and CEO. Bernard Arnault, Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement.

According to Abloh’s family statement on the designer’s Instagram account, Abloh has been fighting cardiovascular sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that causes tumors in the heart, for the past two years.

“Since his diagnosis in 2019, he has personally chosen to endure the fight and has received numerous challenging treatments while directing several key institutions across fashion, art and culture.” The statement states.

Abloh is survived by his wife Shannon Abloh and his children, Rowe and Gray.
