Tokyo-A Japanese princess who abandoned the throne to marry a commoner college lover left for New York on Sunday as the couple pursued happiness as a newlywed and left a country that criticized their romance. bottom.

The 30-year-old departure of former Princess Mako Komuro and Kei Komuro boarding an airplane was broadcast live by a major Japanese broadcasting station while camera flashes were flying at Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

Kei Komuro, a graduate of Fordham University School of Law, works for a law firm in New York. He has not yet passed his bar exam. This is another news that the local media used to attack him, but it’s common to pass after many attempts.

“I love Mako,” he told reporters last month after registering their marriage in Tokyo. They did so without a wedding reception or other regular festive ceremonies.

“I want to live the only life with my loved one,” he said.

Japan looks modern in many ways, but its values regarding family relationships and the status of women are rooted in feudalism and remain somewhat outdated.

Such a view was emphasized in the public reaction to marriage. Some Japanese feel that they have a say in such issues, as taxpayer money underpins the imperial system.

The other princess married the common people and left the palace. But Mako was the first to elicit such public protests, including enthusiastic reactions on social media and local tabloids.

Speculation ranged from whether the couple could afford to live in Manhattan, how much money Kei Komuro would make, and whether the former princess would provide financial support to her husband.

Mako is the niece of Emperor Naruhito, who also married Masako, a commoner. Masako often suffered mentally in a regulated life in the imperial corridor. Negative media reports surrounding Mako’s marriage gave her what the palace doctor described last month as a form of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Former Emperor Akihito, the father of the current emperor, was the first member of the imperial family to marry a commoner. His father was an emperor who was defeated by Japan in World War II.

Although the family has no political power, it serves as a symbol of the country, attends ceremonial events, visits disaster areas and is relatively popular.

Only men inherit the chrysanthemum tone. Mako is the daughter of the emperor’s younger brother, and her 15-year-old brother is expected to eventually become the emperor.

Complicating the marriage of Wang Yuanji, announced in 2017, was an economic controversy involving Kei Komuro’s mother. According to Kyodo News, this issue has recently been resolved.

When Kei Komuro returned from the United States in September, he met again for the first time in three years. They met 10 years ago when they attended International Christian University in Tokyo.

In announcing their marriage, the museum curator, the former princess, clarified her choice.

“He’s the one I have to be,” she said. “Marriage is the decision we need to stay true to our hearts.”
