Chicago (AP) — Former US Congressman Harris W. Fawell of Illinois, who served for seven terms in Congress and was a State Senator, has died. He was 92 years old.

Fawell died of Alzheimer’s disease complications at his home outside Naperville on Thursday, his wife Ruth told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Republican Fawell represented the districts of the Chicago region in Congress when he retired from 1985 to 1999. Known as a fiscal conservative, he spent time on a bipartisan panel against excessive government spending on legislators’ pet projects.

The family remembers a witty and compassionate person.

“He was a loving, honest and intelligent man,” said his 69-year-old wife. “Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather.”

Fawell was born in West Chicago in 1929. He earned a law degree from the University of Kent, Chicago Law School and worked as a lawyer. He was part of a well-known family in DuPage County politics.His brother Bruce is a judge in the circuit court, and his sister-in-law Beverly State legislator..

Harris Fawell began his career in the Illinois Senate in 1963 and resigned in 1977 due to a failed bid by the Illinois Supreme Court.
