New York (AP) -Greg Kinnear was only a month after making its Broadway debut in the play “To Kill a Mockingbird” when the pandemic closed the theater in March 2020. He hasn’t given up: early next year he will try again.
The two-time Emmy Award winner and Oscar candidate will take over the role of Atticus Finch from Jeff Daniels from January 5, 2022.
“Greg Kinnear IMDb’s credits have nothing to suggest that I’m the obvious choice to take on this role,” he told The Associated Press. “This will all be a new endeavor for me. I welcome it and am excited about it.”
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 and is widely hailed as a delicate portrait of racial tensions in Alabama in the 1930s. At its core is Atticus Finch, a lawyer who was asked to defend a black man who was falsely accused of raping a white woman.
Lee’s iconic book was staged by Aaron Sorkin, who won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for the script for “Social Network.” The play is directed by Bartlett Sher.
Sorkin’s script, which cuts out the undergrowth of minor characters and reinforces other characters, especially the maids Calpurnia and Tom Robinson, who were mistakenly accused of rape, really grabbed Kinia.
“It moved me very emotionally. It’s a very beautiful and slightly modernized material to make it relevant in a very reverberant way now,” he said.
“I feel like he humanized Atticus the way he needed it, and at the same time, all the texture and power of the book I didn’t feel was lost.”
Kinia visited New York to discuss her role with the creative team. He hasn’t seen the show yet, but has set foot on the empty 1,435-seat Shubert Theater stage. “I felt a little breathtaking,” he says.
He plans to begin rehearsals in December, and it has not yet been decided whether he will see Daniels play that role during the four-week preparation period.
“If I go and see it, I’m sure I’ll be surprised, but at a distance, I feel like I’m a little freed from creativity by not looking back,” he said. Says.
Kinia won an Oscar for “As Good As It Gets,” and his additional credits include “You’ve Got Mail,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Sabrina,” and “Baby Mom.” .. He has also won two Daytime Emmy Awards for “Talk Soup.”
Although he admits that his theater experience is limited, he starred in 2012 productions on the New York stage and at the Powerhouse Theater on film. He says he trusts the cast and crew to “kill Mockingbird”. “I’m happy to be in the vehicle,” he said.
