Kenosha, Wisconsin (NewsNation Now) — Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted of one deliberate murder and four other charges in connection with a deadly shooting in Wisconsin last year.
The jury returned with a verdict after nearly three and a half days of deliberation.
The 18-year-old Rittenhaus could have been sentenced to life imprisonment if convicted of his most serious offense.
He was charged with murder, attempted murder, killed two men with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle, and recklessly endangered his safety by injuring a third.
The shooting took place during the night of protests against police violence against blacks in the turbulent summer of 2020. The Rittenhouse is as white as the one he shot. The jury looked overwhelmingly white.

Rittenhaus, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, went to Kenosha with an AR-type semi-automatic firearm and a medic bag, saying that former police and firefighting cadets were trying to protect their property.

Just before midnight, Rittenhaus shot and killed Joseph Rosenbaum as Rosenbaum chased him across the parking lot. When Rittenhouse escaped from the scene, someone in the crowd tried to kick his face, and Anthony Huber shook his skateboard at him, connecting to Rittenhouse’s head and neck. Rittenhaus shot deadly Hoover. After a while, Gaiji Grosskreutz rushed to him with a pistol. Rittenhaus shot him in his arm. Grosskreutz survived.
Prosecutors portray Rittenhaus as an instigator of three shootings, and his lawyer states that Rittenhaus acted for self-defense.
The incident split Americans over whether Rittenhaus was a patriot or a vigilant against lawlessness.
The ruling came after a dramatic trial in which the defense demanded suspicion about what they claimed was an out-of-range question asked by the prosecutor’s chief. The two-week testimony ended when Judge Bruce Schroeder rejected the count of dangerous weapons possession by persons under the age of 18. It carries up to 9 months in prison.
The defense argued that Wisconsin law had exceptions related to the length of the barrel of the weapon. After the prosecutor admitted that the Rittenhouse rifle was not a pistol, the judge dismissed the charges.
During gambling, Rittenhaus testified at his trial, at some point sobbing the stand violently, and the judge called for a break. I protected myself. Prosecutors attempted to portray him as an inexperienced teenager who misrepresented his age and medical training to other armed civilians in his group on the night of the shooting.
