Missouri school district hires its own students to combat labor shortages

Jefferson County, MissouriKTVI) — It’s no secret that there are jobs in several industries across the United States, but the northwestern school district in Jefferson County, Missouri is not exempt from a national labor shortage.

The district is currently hiring its own high school students to fill the jobs that are open in the district.

Kim Hawk, Chief Operating Officer of the district, said: “We had a hard time finding help. If you drive around and see signs of needing help everywhere, you know that competition is fierce, so we know we need to make other plans. I did. “

Last week, the district held job fairs to hold several positions, from cooks to maintenance and after-school childcare.

“We have children who are very capable and able to do a good job in this community and other workplaces. Look back and explain why we don’t use those resources in our facility. Please, “said Desi Kirchhofer, director of the Northwest School District.

Twenty-five students applied for work. We are currently in an onboarding process that includes fingerprints. The district said that wages are within the minimum wage, but time is a big perk.

“If they worked in a fast food restaurant, they work long nights, nights, weekends and holidays,” said Mark Catalana, Chief Human Resources Officer of the district.

He said work in the district is beneficial to students as it does not include midnight, weekends, or holidays. The school district said that working in education meant that education was always a top priority and that they would be flexible for students who are also their employees.

“In reality, we plan to hire more students than positions, so we have flexibility in student schedules,” says Hawk. “So if they are planning a big test, we have flexibility in their schedule because their grades and being a student are their top priorities.”

The school district also provides transportation for students and employees to move from one school to another.

The district said it was receiving calls from other districts to get ideas on how the plan was going. The district said it would encourage other districts to do this as well.
