Springfield, Illinois (AP) — All people released from Illinois prisons will be detained with their new state ID card under a program that will be used in all state prisons by next year.
Rob Jeffreys, director of the Illinois Corrections Bureau, said the card would help former prisoners return to their communities and reduce their chances of returning to prison.
According to state officials, the pilot program, launched last year and expanded in April, processed 346 state ID cards as of October. It should be operational at all 27 IDOC facilities by April.

The correction staff will take a picture of the applicant and send it all to the Secretary of State’s office to process the request. Individuals will receive a card upon release.
