Chicago (AP) — A Chicago police sergeant was charged with shooting a car thief during off-hours in a busy parking lot in a suburban store.
Oneta Sampson Kearney, 58, appears in court on Sunday and faces a single count of reckless launches of firearms. The bond provider has identified her as an off-duty Chicago police officer. Kearney was ordered to be released on bail of $ 5,000.
The message left to her lawyer on Monday was not immediately returned.
Prosecutors claimed that her SUV was idling near the entrance to Sam’s Club in Evergreen Park when the three men approached. It is said that one person got into the car and started driving. Kearney then allegedly fired a 9mm pistol against the ground behind the vehicle.
The bullet did not hit the car and no one was injured.
The prosecution said the store’s parking lot was crowded with pedestrians, including children, nearby. Kearney then called the police but did not immediately report that she had fired her weapon, the prosecutor said.
