Denver (AP) — Colorado Republican Lauren Boebert apologized on Friday for using anti-Muslim language to describe his recent encounter with Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar.
In her apology, Bobert did not address Omar’s criticism that Bobert made up her story about the encounter at the US Capitol.
Boebert said, “I apologize to someone in the Islamic community who was offended by the comments about Congressman Omar. I contacted her office to talk to her directly. Without this unnecessary distraction. There are many policy differences that should be focused on. “
Boebert said during this vacation, according to a video clip-posted by a Twitter account called Patriot Takes. In it, she says she and her staff were using the Capitol elevator when she saw a vigilant Capitol officer running towards them. She turned to the left and said she found Omar standing beside them.
“Well, she doesn’t have a backpack. We should be fine,” recalls Bobert laughing at the audience. “And I said,’Oh, the jihad corps decided to come to work today.'”
“In fact, when she looks at me in the Capitol, this Bahoon looks down, this whole story is made up,” Omar tweeted late Thursday. “Sadly, she thinks prejudice gains her influence.”
“Anti-Islamic prejudice is not interesting and should not be normalized,” Omar continued. “Parliament cannot be a place where the hateful and dangerous Islamic metaphor is not criticized.”
Calls and emails requesting comments from Bobert and Omar were not returned immediately on Friday.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned Bobert’s remarks in a statement on Friday and urged GOP House minority leader Kevin McCarthy and other Republican leaders to deny Bobert’s remarks.
He said the reference to Bobert’s backpack was “a smear of Islamophobia that all Muslims are terrorists” and also the use of the term “jihad corps”.
“To tell this nasty joke, misusing Islamic terminology is not inferior,” Edward Ahmed Mitchell, CAIR’s national deputy director, told CNN on Friday. Mitchell explained that “jihad” is a sacred term for “every struggle for God,” such as philanthropy or the battle for social justice.
Congressman Omar and Democrat Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tribe sometimes refer to themselves as “squads.”
