Republican Senator Mike Rounds’ wife, Jean Rounds, dies of cancer | WGN Radio 720

Sioux Falls, SD (AP) — Jean Rounds, wife of Republican Senator Mike Rounds of South Dakota, died on Tuesday. She was 65 years old.

Jean Rounds has been treated for cancer since May 2019. Doctors initially found a malignant, aggressive tumor near the sciatic nerve. She underwent multiple chemotherapy and surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, but Mike Round said in September 2020 that doctors had found another tumor during the examination.

Former South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds won his second term in the Senate last year while his wife was being treated.

As the first lady in South Dakota from 2003 to 2011, Gene Round advocated childhood literacy through the “Reach Out and Lead” program, raising awareness of women’s heart health. She also led the design of the governor’s mansion, which was completed in 2005. And she continued to be a member of the committee overseeing the grounds of the State Capitol until her death.

The couple met while attending South Dakota State University, where Jean Round earned a degree in office management. She has worked for the state government for 27 years and has held positions at universities, state planning bureaus, and the Ministry of Transport.

Jean Rounds said in a statement last year that diagnosing her cancer was the most difficult task she faced, but her husband was involved in her “every stage.”

“He didn’t complain and sat with me for days in that room at the Mayo Clinic,” she said.

The couple lived in Fort Pierre, across the Missouri River from the capital city of Pierre. They had four children and ten grandchildren.

“The love of my life is largely,” Mike Round said in a statement. “There is no further treatment. No more pain. Just peace.”
