Hanson, “Against the World” (3CG record)
The Hansons are celebrating 30 years as a band next year, and if it makes you feel old, it’s not their fault. They even released an album to help you feel young again.
The seven songs “Against the World” is a rich and diverse group of songs that introduces the range of brothers, musiciansship and influence. The monster sugar pop hit “MMMBop” is left far away in the rear-view mirror.
The album begins with “Annalie” with bright harmonies and guitar pieces reminiscent of Paul Simon. “Don’t Ever Change” has the rocking sound of Cheap Trick. This is probably because Cheap Trick Rick Nielsen is playing the guitar.
Rock-pop “Only Love” has Eddie Vedder-like vocals that change from a dark spare space to an arena singing voice. Hanson’s harmony is queen-like “strong” and brilliant, “One” is a wonderful plea for unity, and the national anthem of “Fearless” leans on the orchestra as the brothers soar over the strings.
But the highlights are the title tracks Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson. “We belong to a restless / Keep company with rebels and dreamers,” they sing. “Victory and failure have the same scars.” If it is against the world, we are on their side.
