“The Future”, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats (Stax Records / Concord)

I don’t know what the future will be, but it just sounds like the “future.”

That’s the title of 11-track Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweat’s illustrious new vintage R & B album, with fresh coolness exploding seams. It has a sound rooted in the past, but it doesn’t imitate it. It has a fresh, modern and retro atmosphere that makes sense once you listen to it.

“You have to dig a lot of holes to get into something deeper / you have to sing a lot of souls to know how to feel it,” Laitriff sings, “something is wrong.” ..

“The Future” is like the reunion of Rateliff & The Night Sweats, who spent 2020 away when Frontman toured behind his solo folk album “And It’s Still Alright”. This is Rateliff’s first album with Night Sweats since 2018’s “Tearing at the Seams”.

Bob Dylan-inspired titles lead to funky “survivors,” meditative “face down in the moment,” and soulful “love me til i am gone.” .. Other highlights are “What If I” and the foot stomper “Love Don’t”. Each song feels like a comfortable vintage jeans that lives perfectly.

Night Sweats horn players (Andreas Wild, Jeff Dazey, Daniel Hardaway) are not added as a retrofit like many horns in the band. Here, they are very beautifully integrated and often lift and carry luggage.

The lyrics explore cautious optimism in a relentless world. “I feel healed,” Laitriff sings with “Oh, I.” He and his band do just that in “The Future”.
