Prague (AP) —Thousands gathered on Sunday in the Czech capital, Prague, to protest the government’s restrictions on a record surge in coronavirus infections.
Protesters included members and supporters of many peripheral parties and groups who failed to win parliamentary seats in the October elections. This was the third protest in the last two weeks. Participants did not wear face covers, did not follow social distance rules, and did not drink beer, even though drinking in public was prohibited.
At Letna Park in Prague, protesters chanted “freedom.” While displaying banners that discourage vaccination, such as “It’s enough!” And “My body is my choice.”
Police did not intervene.
The country has repeatedly set new daily infectious diseases, setting a record high of nearly 28,000 on Thursday. The infection rate was 1,191 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 7 days. Overall, 10.7 million people have enrolled more than 2.1 million cases and 32,837 COVID-related deaths. Immunization rates are lower than in many other EU countries.
The Czech government declared a state of emergency for 30 days and imposed additional coronavirus restrictions on Friday in an effort to combat the surge. Among them, all Christmas markets across the country are banned and bars, restaurants, nightclubs, discos and casinos must close at 10 pm.
Participants in cultural and sporting events in the Czech Republic are currently limited to 1,000, vaccinated or recovering from COVID-19, but from 1,000 to all other public rallies. Only up to 100 people can participate.
