San Francisco (AP) — Stephen Curry became the first NBA player to make 3,000 career three pointers on Tuesday night in a game where the Denver Nuggets barely stopped the NBA’s leading Golden State Warriors 89-86. ..
Denver’s Nikola Jokić blocked shots that could lead the game in the last few seconds to maintain the victory after Jonathan Kuminga’s team almost broke the 24-point half-time lead. The Warriors had another chance to tie the game, but Andre Iguodala missed three points on the buzzer.
Jokić led the Nuggets with 22 points, 18 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals, while Will Barton added 21 points.
Andrew Wiggins scored 21 points and 8 rebounds against the Golden State in his first game back from the league’s COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocol. Curry, who scored 21 out of 23 points in the second half, scored three corners in the second half of the third quarter and played 157 games in a row with a three-point field goal. It ties his own NBA record he set in 2014-16.
Warriors dragged 60-36 in half, but aggressively held Denver down while starting the third quarter with 17-5 runs to cut Denver’s lead to 65-53. They cut the Nuggets lead to 84-82, leaving 2:08 after pulling within 5 leaving 7:20 in the fourth quarter with Curry’s step-back 3 pointer.
The Warriors drew 84 with Gary Payton II’s dunk shot, leaving 1:04. Burton returned the Nuggets to the front of 86-84 and chipped into subsequent possessions.
The Nuggets started the game with a 10-0 run and built a 31-16 lead after the first quarter. Curry remained scoreless until the first half and eventually scored his first point, leaving 2:08 in the second quarter.
Golden State was injured in a free throw and shot in 16 of 31 games.
