Crown Point, Indiana — A 12-year-old Crown Point boy is on his way to recovery after being seriously injured in a fire pot explosion over the weekend.
Jayden Mendes was helping his father, a heating and cooling contractor, when something went wrong in Hobart on Sunday.
The furnace, where Mendes was helping his father work, began to make a swooshing — Jimmy Mendes was sent to his van for a portion. After a while, the furnace exploded, sending Jayden 50 feet into the air.
He was taken to the hospital with more than 25% of his body burned.
“You’re going to get it done,” said her mother, Teresa Mendez. “That’s what I keep telling him,’Keep strong.'”
Doctors were able to remove Jayden from the ventilator, but he remains in the ICU burn unit after undergoing the first surgery, which is likely to be multiple surgeries.
“It’s a long way to recovery, but he can do it.”
