Cook County surpasses 1,000 murders for the first time since 1994 – CBS Chicago

Chicago (CBS) — For the first time in more than 30 years, more than 1,000 murders have occurred in Cook County, including 777 in Chicago alone.

As of Tuesday, the county’s total number of murders was 1,009, more than a month old in 2021, according to the Cook County Medical Inspector’s Office. Of these, 927 were gun-related murders.

Cook County last committed more than 1,000 murders a year in 1994, with 1,141 murders. Cook County’s record was 1,229 murders in 1991. Cook County committed 986 murders last year, up 40% from a total of 675 in 2019.

According to the coroner’s office, there have been 777 murders so far this year in Chicago alone. This is more than the total number of murders reported by the Chicago Police Department last year when CPD reported 769 murders.

According to the Cook County Medical Inspector’s Office, the majority of murder victims are black, with 81% of the victims identified as African-American. Latin Americans accounted for about 15% of the county’s murder victims.

The oldest murder victim to date in Cook County this year was 84, and the youngest was only one month.
