Report: Former Cubs Shortstop Javier Baez Signs Tigers

Detroit – When the Cubs decided to trade off the core of the 2016 World Series Championship team in July, many wondered how many of those players could return to the club as free agents. I did.

Javier Baez does not seem to be one of those returning to the north.

Former Cubs shortstops will sign a six-year, $ 140 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, according to many reports from MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The club has not yet confirmed any movement.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, this total will actually be less than the Cubs reported to have been offered to Baez before the 2020 season. In his report from April, the Cubs offered Baez $ 180 million, but declined.

He is the first core player the team has rebuilt under Theo Epstein for the past decade and has signed a new club after being traded. Third baseman Kris Bryant (Giants) and first baseman Anthony Rizzo (Yankees) remain free agents.

Two all-stars, the 2016 National League Championship Series co-MVP, the 2018 MVP finalist, and the 2020 Gold Grab Award-winning Cubs, Baez, outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong on July 31. Was traded to Mets. After arriving in New York, he finished the year with 9 home runs and 22 RBIs with a .299 / .371 / .515 slash line and an average of .265 with 31 home runs and 87 RBIs, but he finished the league. The lead was 184 strikeouts.
