This year, a social media service that resolved a privacy lawsuit against unauthorized use of photo face tagging and other biometric data requires users to trust it and take greater risks. We are affiliated with a UK-based nonprofit organization called the Revenge Porn Helpline. The goal is to build a tool to prevent intimate images from being uploaded without consent to Facebook, Instagram, and other participating platforms.

The tool will be released Thursday and will ask users to send images to a central global website called StopNCII.org, which stands for “Stop Non-Consensual Intimate Images”.

“This is a big step forward,” said helpline manager Sophie Mortimer. Talk to NBC News. “It’s important to me to put this control over the content back into the hands of those directly affected by this issue, not just the whims of the perpetrators who threaten sharing.”

The submit process needs to ask for confirmation that StopNCII.org is in the image. Photos and videos are converted into unique digital fingerprints provided to participating companies, including Facebook and Instagram.

StopNCII.org cannot access or save a copy of the original image. Instead, the image is converted to a hash in the user’s browser and StopNCII.org gets only the hashed copy.

Facebook has tried such a program before. In the 2017 pilot, the image was reviewed by a human moderator at the time of submission and converted into a hash. It caused a privacy issue.

Those who submit materials to the platform can track cases in real time and withdraw from participation at any time.

This tool is only available in English at startup.
