New York (AP) — Denis O’Brien, former Beatles solo career manager George Harrison and co-founded with Harrison to boost hits such as the classic Monty Python’s Life of Bryan. , Died at the age of 80.

O’Brien’s daughter, Kristen O’Brien, told The Associated Press that Dennis O’Brien died on December 3 at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, England, after being hospitalized with severe abdominal pain. She said the exact cause of death had not been identified.

Originally from St. Louis, O’Brien emigrated to Europe after earning a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, leaving a long record of success with setbacks and court battles. Through actor Peter Sellers, who helped his career come back, he met Harrison in 1973 and soon formed a personal and professional bond. Harrison hired him as a manager after breaking up with Allen Klein, who became the Beatles manager in 1969, but eventually dropped out of the group, which broke up a year after his contract with Klein.

In 1978, Harrison and O’Brien co-founded HandMade Films, the top independent company for the next decade. Their first project was “Life of Brian”. This is Monty Python’s controversial religious parody, funded after the last-minute dropout of EMI Films. “Life of Brian” is widely recognized as one of the best movie comedies, and Handmade has produced “Mona Lisa,” “Withnail and I,” “Nuns on the Run,” and more. One notable flop was the Shanghai Surprise, released in 1986, to prevent Madonna and her husband Sean Penn from resigning from the crew due to tenacious paparazzi, a violent explosion from the pen, and Harrison. He starred in a work featuring an unfortunate atmosphere that jumped in.

Handmade went out of business in 1991, and the Harrison-O’Brien partnership ended in court. O’Brien was ordered by a California judge in 1996 to pay Harrison $ 11 million in damages on suspicion of mismanagement of the company’s finances. In August 2001, three months before Harrison’s death, the judge rejected the musician’s efforts to prevent O’Brien from declaring bankruptcy.

Harrison’s best friend Eric Idle later claimed that O’Brien tried to fire him from Monty Python because he was afraid that the idol was pointing Harrison at him.

O’Brien also had problems with his family’s work. In 1997, he took over his father, Albert O’Brien, as President and Chief Executive Officer of Union Financial Group Limited. Two years later, the company’s board kicked him out of what an executive called a “difference in business strategy.”

According to Kristen O’Brien, he has essentially retired in the last two decades and “enjoyed life with his wife, Philida O’Brien.” He married four times and most recently married Philida, who died in 2019. His survivors include brother Douglas and daughters Kristen and Laura.
