Norfolk, Virginia (AP) — Grammy Award-winning musician Pharrell Williams acts like an “emerging majority” to new graduates of the Historically Black Colleges of Virginia, helping to develop the region’s business and culture. Said.
Williams gave an autumn graduation speech at Norfolk State University, not far from where producers and rappers grew up on neighboring Virginia Beach.
“I didn’t attend Norfolk, but I always attended,” Williams said. “I am honored to have made this part of my work, my story, and even today I can’t wait to see how far the wonderful and impressive graduates of Norfolk go. “

Prior to the presentation, Willams said he remembered the band as a kid and wondered why the Virginia Beach High School band lacked the same “rhythm” as Norfolk.
“I wanted people to feel the way the Norfolk band made me feel,” he said.
Williams said the city of Norfolk will thrive because it recognizes how important it is to recognize past and local heroes.
He told listeners to spend money on the local businesses they care about and play their part by changing outdated words like the word “minority.”
“We are an emerging majority,” he said. “Don’t wait until election day. Vote today, tomorrow, and the next day with your wallet.”
Williams told city officials last month that he would not return his “something in the water” music festival to the city’s oceanfront, partly because of how the city handled the investigation.
