Houston (AP) LeBron James and Russell Westbrook both won triple-doubles, and the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Houston Rockets 132-123 on Tuesday night, scoring the best five skids of the season.
“The hardest part of the league is winning,” James said. “So when you win, you shouldn’t take it for granted.”
James scored 32 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in his third triple-double of the season, making it the fifth consecutive 30-point game. Westbrook scored 24 points in 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the seventh season.
Houston got stuck most of the night, but James took over late to allow the Lakers to pull away and hand over their fifth consecutive loss to the rocket.
“I think this is a big step forward for us to fight this together, finish the way Lebron and Russ were doing together, and bring it home,” because of the COVID-19 protocol. Frank Vogel’s fifth straight victory.
When James was asked to keep a goal in Jalen Green’s layup, Rockets dragged one. This put Houston at the top with two and a half minutes left. However, the Lakers disputed the call, which was overturned. Carmelo Anthony made a three-pointer a few seconds later and extended the lead to 120-116.
James then added two free throws, with one-handed dunk shot after Houston’s turnover to 124-116 with less than 90 seconds left.
Kevin Porter Jr.’s three pointers laid up to win Houston within five before James attacked again and extend the lead to 126-119 with less than a minute left. James then made four free throws to ensure victory.
“I feel like I’m in a really good attack zone right now,” he said.
The second overall choice in this year’s draft, Green led the rocket by 24 points after missing 15 of the last 16 games with a tense left hamstring.
“We were hoping to win,” said Houston coach Stephen Silas. “We had no problems confronting them and didn’t retreat. They had some great players who played very well. Triple-double Russ, Triple-Double Revlon, And Melo is doing him. It was hard. “
Anthony was 24 points off the bench the night James started at the center, but big names Dwight Howard and DeAndre Jordan didn’t play.
James said he was the first to start at the center at any level of basketball.
“I have never played in the center of my life,” he said. “I’ve always been on the wings or dealing with the ball.”
Fizdale praised the diversity James showed in his role on Tuesday night.
“This guy is incredible,” he said. “As basketball people, we are very fortunate to see what we are seeing with this guy.”
The Lakers took the lead by scoring the last five points of the third quarter, opening fourth with a 6-0 run and 103-92 with 11 minutes remaining.
Green then proceeded to Houston, making two three-pointers with a 10-2 spurt and reducing the deficit to 105-102.
Porter scored 22 points and 9 assists after missing the last 12 games due to a thigh injury. Christian Wood also scored 22 points.
Josh Christopher tied it up with a layup with less than a minute left in the third quarter. However, the Lakers scored the last five points of the quarter, capped by Westbrook with a three, and took a 97-92 lead in the fourth quarter. Westbrook pointed to the LA bench and laughed loudly as he got off the court after the shot.
