Mickey Joseph, who coached wide receivers in Lincoln, Nebraska for the past five seasons, will return to Nebraska as a receiver coach, pass game coordinator, and associate head coach under Scott Frost.
Frost, who announced the hiring of Joseph on Friday, is trying to fill the vacancy of three other coaching staff after the 3-9 season.
Joseph played the Cornhuskers quarterback from 1988 to 1991 and started nine games in his career.
“I am honored to be back in Nebraska to join the staff of Frost Coach,” Joseph said. “I can’t wait to arrive in Lincoln, work with the players and represent Nebraska football. When you become a Hasker, your love for the program never leaves you, my family and me. Couldn’t get any more excited.
Joseph has a reputation for being a powerful recruiter, and in 2019 he coached Ja’Marr Chase, who won the Billetnikov Award for the team that won the National Championship in January 2020. Chase is one of the four LSU receivers selected in the first two rounds under Joseph. NFL draft.
The 53-year-old Joseph was made available for an ongoing coaching transition at LSU, where Brian Kelly was hired on behalf of Ed Orgeron.
“Mickey Joseph brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our coaching staff,” Frost said. “He is an excellent teacher and mentor for young players and a proven recruiter.”
Joseph joined the LSU staff in 2017 after coaching a running back at Louisiana Tech in 2016. Joseph also coached Gramling, Alcorn State University, and Langston University.
Joseph was one of the most popular high school quarterbacks after graduating from high school in New Orleans. Playing at Tom Osborne’s Triple Option Offense, he was the starter of the 1990 team, rushing 1,091 yards and 16 touchdowns in 34 games, passing 909 yards and 14 touchdowns to finish his career.
