New Orleans (AP) — A member of the New Orleans City Council has changed the street now named after General Robert E. Lee of the South Army and is one of the most famous musicians in the city who died in 2015. We are promoting the replacement with Toussaint.
Councilor Jared C. Brosset introduced an ordinance to pass through the northern part of the city near Lake Pontchartrain and rename the street after Tusan. The Commission, appointed in 2020, was tasked with identifying streets, parks and locations in the city and recommending new names to them in commemoration of white supremacy. One of the 37 locations identified in the report was Robert E. Lee Boulevard. It recommends that the author rename it in honor of Toussaint.
“Toussaint was a beloved and internationally acclaimed New Orleans songwriter, producer and musician who was instrumental in shaping the sound of modern New Orleans music,” the report read.
