New York (AP) — New York Film Critics Association Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s intimate three-hour epic, named “Drive My Car” on Friday, and Haruki Murakami’s adaptation of the short story, the best movie of the year.
Hamaguchi’s film about a widowed actor, played by Hidetoshi Nishijima, has won the best screenplay since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and is widely welcomed. “Drive My Car,” which was recently released as a limited release, is an entry for the Japan Academy Prize. This is the second time in the last 40 years that the highest honor of a critic has been selected for a non-English film. (The other was Alfonso Cuarón’s “Rome” three years ago.)
Jane Campion’s Montana Gothic drama “The Power of the Dog” has won three awards and led all the films. Campion won the Best Director Award, Benedict Cumberbatch won the Best Actor Award, and the Best Supporting Actor Award was given to Kodi Smit McPhee.
Critics in New York have spread their honor around, as it is usually the case. The Best Actress Award went to Lady Gaga to play as Patrizia Regiani in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci”. Kathryn Hunter won for her ghostly witch in Joel Coen’s next Shakespeare adaptation, “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the best script for his coming-of-age comedy Licorice Pizza.

Michael Rianda’s Robot Apocalypse-Family Road Trip Comedy “The Mitchells and Machines” won the Best Animated Feature Film Award. The best shoot went to Janus Kamisungki for the resurrection of Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”. Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Elena Ferrante’s script “Lost Daughter” became the best of the first films. The best documentary went to Jonas Poer Rasmussen’s animated refugee story “Escape”. And Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World,” a record of youth and love in Oslo, Norway, won the best foreign language film.
The group also announced several special awards. Maya Cade created the Black Film Archive, a catalog of black films available online from 1915 to 1979. The late Diane Weyermann, a film executive who helped produce documentaries on social issues such as “An Inconvenient Truth” and “Citizenfour.” And Marshall Fine, a New York film critic and general manager of NYFCC.
The New York Film Critics Association, founded in 1935, will award the 89th award at the ceremony on January 10. Last year, the group chose Kelly Reichardt’s “First Cow” as the best movie. The year before, I chose Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman”.
