Popular payroll and timekeeping systems used by hundreds of companies, including many in Chicago, have been hit by massive ransomware attacks.
Known as UKG, Ultimate Kronos Group is a payroll software trusted by 40 million workers. On Tuesday, the company issued a statement that the attack disrupted service.
Many companies have been affected, including the University of Illinois Health and Marriott Hotel.
Elijah Anderson, a Chicago-based cybersecurity expert, said ransomware attacks are becoming more common.
“Ransomware has a lot of sequences today, so it’s constantly evolving and even hard to define,” Anderson said.
Anderson said it was premature to identify the person responsible for the case.
“This is an opportunity for growth, and technology is so easy to use and affordable that anyone with a laptop and using the internet on a dark web forum can learn the dangerous basics. You can, “says Anderson.
According to Anderson, the software has certain vulnerabilities that all businesses of all sizes can address, such as changing passwords and two-factor authentication to log in to internal websites.
