New York (AP) — Stephen Curry has jumped to the top of the 3-pointer NBA record book.

Curry broke Ray Allen’s record on Tuesday night with a 2,974th three-pointer hit in the first quarter of the Golden State Warriors against the New York Knicks.

Curry fired a shot from the right wing, leaving 7:33, and shook his arm toward the sky while jogging backwards on the court. The Warriors then committed a foul and immediately called a timeout to begin the celebration. Curry hugged Steve Kerr, longtime teammate Draymond Green, his family, and Allen in the arena.

Curry is often regarded as the league’s best shooter, and that number confirms him. He already owns two of the top three three-point seasons. This includes only the 4003 season. Currently, Allen has a career record since passing Reggie Miller in 2011.

The record came at Madison Square Garden. There, Curry had one of the highlights of his early career on February 27, 2013, making 11 3 pointers and scoring 54 points. While becoming one of the biggest and most popular stars in the game, he continues to win two MVP awards and three championships.

“Steph appeals to everyone, not just hardcore fans who see his 3-point percentage,” Carr said before the match. “I think fans are attracted to him just because of his humility and story, and how hard he had to work. From that point of view, it goes a little beyond sports.

“I think that’s a great proof for someone who is talented but earns everything through work other than a gift given.”

When Curry entered the league in 2009, Curry’s stardom wasn’t guaranteed as a seventh-place pick from Davidson, far from one of the basketball powerhouses that normally produce top players.

But perhaps with an unmatched combination of dribbling and shooting accuracy, he led the long-range revolution, turning the three-pointer from a retrofit to a weapon. He has led the league six times with three points and is on track to reach seventh place in the revived Warriors team, which once again holds the league’s best record.
