Sterling firefighter dies on duty

Sterling, Illinois — Firefighters died on duty while fighting a house fire in Rock Falls, Illinois, according to fire authorities.

According to fire authorities, the Sterling Fire Department responded to a house fire on Rock Falls’ 10031 Ridge Road and assisted several other fire departments around 11:04 pm on Friday night.

Garrett Ramos, Lieutenant Sterling, needed rescue operations as he was fighting a fire in his house when the floor under him collapsed.

The EMS crew attempted life-saving techniques while Ramos was taken to the CGH Medical Center and later declared dead. Ramos, 38, is a nine-year veteran in the division, leaving behind his wife and two children.

Ramos’ death is the first line of duty in the history of the Sterling Fire Department.
