European (or common) buckthorn is a headache for the presence of many Chicago naturalists.

Brought to the United States for ornamental purposes in the early 1800s, the plant has long crossed the boundaries of cultivation and intentional use.now Listed as an invasive speciesAccording to the United States Department of Agriculture, buckthorn has “dominated the ecosystem and replaced native species.”

Removing buckthorn is often the first step towards ecosystem restoration in community-wide habitat restoration projects. But what exactly do they look like?

There is a simple hack that does not require a degree in botany, which is especially useful in winter when the leaves are long gone. Scratching under the surface causes buckthorn to let go of itself.

Sweet potatoes are also orange.

This is a demonstration by Christopher Ricardo, Shedd Aquarium Conservation Facilitator. Recent volunteer activity days It was held at Scorky Lagoon.
