Moscow (AP) — A new coronavirus infection in Russia reached a record high on Sunday. This is the third consecutive day of record as highly contagious variants of Omicron spread nationwide.
The National Coronavirus Task Force reported recording 63,205 new infections in 24 hours. This is a surge of over 25% from the record set on Friday. The Task Force reported 679 deaths, as well as other daily deaths in the past week.
The Omicron subspecies has been detected in 64 of 89 regions of the country, and Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said authorities expect it to be the predominant subspecies.
Despite being the first in the world to approve and deploy the COVID-19 vaccine, about half of Russia’s 146 million people are fully vaccinated. In Russia, anyone who received a primary vaccination more than 6 months ago is eligible for a booster vaccination from July.
Gogov.ru, an independent website that tracks vaccinations, estimates that 8.8 million people received booster shots.
Nevertheless, new daily infections have been steadily increasing in Russia since January 10.
The Russian Oblast Coronavirus Task Force has recorded 326,112 deaths since the start of the pandemic. This is the worst death toll in Europe. The Russian Oblast Bureau of Statistics, which uses a broader counting standard, has further increased the number of pandemic deaths, with virus-related deaths exceeding 625,000 from April 2020 to October 2021.
