Charlottesville, Virginia (AP) —Virginia’s new Attorney General has fired lawyers at two large public colleges, his office said, while Jason Miyares was promoted to his new job. Showed significant changes.
Tim Heaphy, a lawyer at the University of Virginia, and Brian Walser, a lawyer at George Mason University, have been dismissed, Miyares spokeswoman Victoria Rasivita told The Washington Post. School advisors within Virginia’s public universities are appointed by the Attorney General.
Heaphy, who also confirmed his dismissal by UVA, worked at school for about three years. According to the newspaper, he had quit his job to work as the Supreme Investigator of the US House of Commons panel investigating the January 6, 2021 riots at the Capitol.
LaCivita said Heaphy’s firing had nothing to do with its investigative role. Rather, in her statement, Heaphy was a “controversial” employment, and Miyares’ democracy predecessor Mark Herring said, “When he brought a lawyer for this particular university, many We excluded qualified internal candidates. “
“Our decision was made after considering the legal decisions made in the last few years,” La Civita said. “The Attorney General wants college lawyers to return to giving legal advice under the law, not the philosophy of the college. We will first look for the next chief lawyer in-house.”
Former Herring staff did not immediately comment on the characteristics of Heaphy’s recruitment on Sunday.
LaCivita did not explain why Walther was parted. According to the post, Heaphy and Walter are both Democrats. LaCivita also does not say whether other counsel at a public university in Virginia has been dismissed.
Heaphy, a former US lawyer in Western Virginia, was hired by UVA in 2018. Prior to that, he conducted an independent survey of the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville in 2017.
Heaphy, a UVA graduate and longtime resident of Charlottesville, said in a statement that serving as a school adviser was “a very honorable and privileged”. In a statement, UVA said the leader thanked Heaphy for “excellent service” and “disappointed to see it finish.”
Walther introduced his dismissal questions to George Mason’s College of Communication Studies and to the Miyares office. The school said Walther has been a lawyer since 2017 and “the Mason community is grateful for Brian’s work and years of service.”
According to the newspaper, Mijares, who defeated herring in the November election, swore on January 15. Approximately 30 employees were dismissed by Miyares shortly before Miyares took office.
